Rheem RTGH-90DVLN Performance Platinum Tankless Gas (Outdoor)
Rheem RTGH-90DVLN Performance Platinum Tankless Gas (Outdoor) Review
The Rheem RTGH-90DVLN is a 9.0 GPM-rated outdoor condensing gas tankless, the "outdoor" variant of Rheem's RTGH-95 series. The "DVLN" suffix identifies direct-vent low NOx outdoor configuration — exterior wall mount with sealed combustion. Eliminates indoor venting entirely.
Specs: 199,000 BTU natural gas (LP version available as RTGH-90DVLP-O), UEF 0.93 (condensing), 9.0 GPM at a 35°F rise or 4.5 GPM at a 70°F rise. Full stainless heat exchanger. Rheem's standard 12-year warranty on the heat exchanger.
The outdoor configuration is common in California, Arizona, Florida, Texas, and other warm-climate markets where exterior wall-mounting is code-acceptable. Eliminates the venting cost ($500–$1,500) of indoor installations and frees indoor space. The unit is exposed to weather — manufacturer-rated for ambient temperatures down to about -10°F before freeze protection kicks in (built-in heater prevents internal freezing in cold conditions).
Right buyer: warm-climate retrofit or new construction in a region permitting exterior wall mount. Wrong buyer: cold climates (the freeze protection consumes electricity year-round; indoor mount is more economical), or homes where exterior aesthetics matter and the unit's exposed location would be visually objectionable. About $2,200 unit, $3,500 installed.
- On-demand operation at 9 GPM — no standby heat loss; unlimited hot water if demand is within flow-rate capacity
- Strong UEF 0.93 efficiency — approximately 20% lower annual operating cost vs 0.62 standard
- 12-year warranty — above-average protection; most competitors offer 6
- High 9 GPM output — serves 3+ simultaneous hot-water fixtures in most US climates
- Requires dedicated 180K BTU gas supply line — undersized gas piping is the leading cause of flow-rate shortfalls
