Niagara water heater installation follows standard residential glass-lined tank install procedure. Underneath, the unit is Niagara Conservation (US)-built — there are no proprietary fittings or unusual install requirements.
Pre-install checklist
- Verify proper electrical circuit (30A 240V for electric) or gas line + venting (gas)
- Confirm cold-supply shutoff valve in working order
- Plan expansion tank installation if not already present
- Verify drain pan availability if installed above finished space
- Have new T&P valve and discharge tube ready
Tools required
- Pipe wrench (12" or 14")
- Channel-lock pliers, adjustable wrench
- Multimeter (electric)
- Tubing cutter (if extending lines)
- Garden hose for draining old tank
- Two-person lift or appliance dolly
Step 1: Drain and remove the old tank
- Shut off power (electric) or gas (gas)
- Shut off cold supply
- Open hot faucet upstairs to break vacuum
- Connect garden hose to drain valve, drain to outside or floor drain
- Disconnect electrical/gas; disconnect water lines
- Walk the old tank out
Step 2: Position new Niagara tank
Place in drain pan, level, 1.5" clearance around for service access.
Step 3: Connect cold inlet with expansion tank
Sequence from supply to tank: ball valve → expansion tank tee → dielectric union → tank cold inlet. Use Teflon tape on threads, hand-tighten plus 1/4 turn.
Step 4: Connect hot outlet
Dielectric union → hot main. Avoid hard elbows immediately at tank top.
Step 5: T&P valve and discharge tube
Ship with T&P pre-installed. Route discharge tube down to within 6" of floor or drain. Do not cap or reduce diameter.
Step 6: Electrical or gas connection
Electric: L1, L2, ground at junction box, torque terminals to 18–22 in-lb.
Gas: connect flex line, pressure-test, verify vent rise/slope.
Step 7: Fill tank — CRITICAL
- Close drain valve
- Open cold supply slowly
- Open hot faucet to release trapped air
- Wait for steady stream (5–10 minutes for fill)
- Visual leak check at all connections
Never restore power or light gas burner with an unfilled tank.
Step 8: First heat and verification
Restore power/light burner. Verify reaches setpoint within 60–90 minutes (electric) or 30–60 minutes (gas). Final leak check at all fittings.
Common install mistakes
- Missing expansion tank
- Direct copper-to-tank without dielectric
- Dry-firing electric elements before fill
- Loose electrical terminals
- Forgetting to register the warranty within 60 days
