Dometic GC10A-4E 10-Gallon Gas+Electric RV Water Heater
Dometic GC10A-4E 10-Gallon Gas+Electric RV Water Heater Review
The Dometic GC10A-4E is a 10-gallon dual-energy (gas + electric) RV water heater designed for larger motorhomes and travel trailers. The "GC10A-4E" reflects Dometic's renaming of the previous Atwood G10A-3E model line — same fundamental unit, current production carries Dometic branding.
Specs: 10 gallons stored, 12,000 BTU propane burner, 1500W electric element, recovery rate ~17 gph on propane or 6 gph on electric (both modes simultaneously for fastest recovery). Aluminum tank with optional anode rod (less corrosion-prone than steel-tank RV alternatives).
The 10-gallon capacity is the upper end of common RV water heater sizes. Serves families of 4-5 with sequential shower use comfortably — where 6-gallon units would run cold by the third shower. Trade-off: requires deeper exterior cutout (16" depth vs 12" for 6-gallon).
Common applications: travel trailers and fifth wheels manufactured for families. Class A motorhomes often use 12+ gallon units. The GC10A-4E fits a specific mid-large RV niche between small-rig 6-gallon and large-rig 12+ gallon configurations.
Service parts widely available through Camping World and RV-specific suppliers. About $600 unit, $250-$450 install for like-for-like replacement of existing 10-gallon Atwood/Dometic units.
- No combustion, no venting required — installs anywhere with 240V electrical access
- Below-average UEF 0.62 — modern standard models reach 0.65+, condensing 0.95+
- 2-year warranty — well below the 8–12 year category average; extended warranty advisable
- Resistance electric has slower recovery than gas at comparable capacity — schedule heavy use to match tank recovery
- Small 10-gallon reserve — supplemental or 1–2 person use only
