Chronomite water heaters require specialized maintenance for tankless/point-of-use applications. Unlike traditional tank water heaters, tankless and POU units lack sediment-prone storage and instead concentrate maintenance on flow paths, heat-exchange surfaces, and control electronics.
Annual maintenance
1. Descaling (the critical task)
Mineral buildup on the heating elements or heat exchanger is the #1 maintenance issue for Chronomite units. In hard-water areas (>7 grains per gallon), descaling is needed every 6–12 months. Procedure:
- Shut off power and water supply to the unit
- Connect a recirculation pump and bucket setup to the cold inlet and hot outlet
- Circulate white vinegar or commercial descaling solution (CLR or equivalent) for 45–60 minutes
- Drain the descaler, flush with fresh water for 5 minutes
- Restore power and verify normal operation
2. Inlet screen cleaning
Most Chronomite units have an inlet screen at the cold water connection that traps debris. Quarterly check; clean by removing and rinsing under running water.
3. Pressure relief valve test
If your Chronomite model has a T&P valve, test annually by lifting the lever briefly.
4. Electrical terminal check (electric models)
Annually with power off, verify all electrical terminals are torqued tight. Loose connections cause arcing and premature element failure.
5. Burner inspection (gas/propane models)
Annually for propane/gas units: inspect burner orifice, verify pilot flame steady (if pilot-equipped), check thermocouple operation.

Chronomite is commercial point-of-use electric tankless specialist; widely used in restaurants, lab handwash stations, and industrial applications. The primary technology is high-amperage electric tankless heaters for instant hot water at fixtures. Typical sizing: 1.5 to 5.5 GPM at 240V single-phase, with 3-phase commercial models. Used in commercial sinks, lab work, hand-washing in food service, point-of-use residential when retrofit is constrained. Maintenance schedule should reflect actual use intensity — heavy-use commercial applications need descaling every 4–6 months; light residential use can extend to 18–24 months in soft-water areas.
Water hardness considerations
Tankless and POU water heaters are particularly sensitive to water hardness. Recommended:
- Hardness under 5 grains: descale every 18–24 months
- Hardness 5–10 grains: descale every 12 months
- Hardness over 10 grains: descale every 6 months OR install a softener upstream
Common maintenance mistakes
- Skipping descaling — causes element failure and reduces capacity
- Forgetting to flush descaler thoroughly (residue corrodes copper and fittings)
- Not powering down before maintenance (electrical hazard, and risk of damage)
