Curated Best-Of List

Best Water Heater Brand

3 expert-curated picks ranked by performance, value, and long-term reliability

Brand matters in water heaters less than buyers usually expect — most reputable US brands deliver similar 10–15 year service life on similar internals. Brand matters more for service network density, warranty length, and channel (where you can buy and who installs). This list ranks the top US water heater brands by who they are best for, not by a single "best brand" verdict that doesn't exist.

Tier 1 — established US residential leaders

Rheem (and Ruud, Richmond — same parent)

The US residential volume leader. Strongest brand at Home Depot. 12-year warranty on the Performance Platinum line is the longest mainstream-tier warranty in the US market. Wide product range covering tank, tankless, heat-pump, and the lifetime-warranty Marathon polybuthylene line. National plumber service network. The default first-shop for most US homeowners and the right answer for the majority of typical residential scenarios.

Ruud is Rheem's commercial-leaning brand sold through plumbing supply houses. Richmond is Rheem's Home Depot value brand. Both share Rheem internals at different price-warranty points.

A.O. Smith (and State, American, Whirlpool, Reliance)

Rheem's main competitor. Stronger at Lowe's than at Home Depot. The A.O. Smith brand family spans premium (A.O. Smith Vertex condensing tanks, Voltex heat-pump) through value (State Premier, Reliance budget). Whirlpool-branded water heaters are A.O. Smith-built. State Select is a mid-tier plumber-channel brand. Reliance is the value tier. American is a third-tier value brand sold through hardware stores.

For most household purposes, the A.O. Smith Conservationist or Signature Premier at Lowe's is functionally equivalent to the Rheem Performance Platinum at Home Depot. The choice often comes down to which big-box channel is closer.

Tier 2 — premium / specialty

Bradford White

The trade favorite. Wholesale-only distribution — not at Home Depot or Lowe's. Heavier construction than retail-channel equivalents. Vitraglas tank lining and ICON intelligent gas control (thermopile-powered — runs through power outages). The water heater plumbers install in their own homes. Right answer when a plumber is doing the install regardless and you want what they trust.

Rinnai

The US residential tankless leader. Roughly 3× the service network density of any tankless competitor. Best-in-class for high-throughput gas tankless residential applications. The RU199iN Sensei is the most-installed premium tankless in the US.

Navien

Close-second tankless, gaining share fast since 2020. The NPE-A series ComfortFlow built-in recirculation eliminates the cold-water sandwich without dedicated return lines — a meaningful engineering advantage for retrofits.

Bosch and Stiebel Eltron

European-engineered premium electric tankless and heat-pump specialists. Higher build quality, longer expected service life, smaller US service networks. The Stiebel Eltron Tempra 36 is the canonical premium whole-house electric tankless. Their heat-pump units (Stiebel Eltron Accelera 220 E) handle cold-climate ambient air better than US-market alternatives.

Tier 3 — value / specialty

EcoSmart

Direct-to-consumer electric tankless specialist. Lifetime warranty on both heat exchanger and electronics — the only major brand offering this. Smaller service network but ships parts directly to homeowners for DIY repair.

Marathon (Rheem-owned brand)

The lifetime-warranty polybuthylene electric tank. The tank cannot rust because it is plastic, not steel. Premium pricing ($1,899 vs $599 for standard electric) recovers over 15+ years of avoided replacement.

Marey, Eccotemp, Suburban, Atwood, Dometic, Furrion

Specialty brands serving specific niches — outdoor/RV propane, mini-tank point-of-use, manufactured-home applications. Not primary-residence brands but the right answer for their specific scenarios.

Decision shortcut

Buy Rheem if you DIY, want broad availability, and value warranty length. Buy A.O. Smith if you shop at Lowe's. Buy Bradford White if a plumber is doing the install. Buy Rinnai or Navien for tankless. Buy Bosch or Stiebel Eltron for premium European engineering. Buy EcoSmart for electric tankless with the longest warranty.
