Heat-pump water heaters need three conditions at the install location:

  • Air volume: minimum 750 cubic feet around the unit. The unit pulls heat from ambient air; if the room is too small, the air cools faster than the unit can heat water. A 10' × 10' × 7.5' room qualifies. A standard closet does not.
