Venting types — this determines the install cost
Three venting categories with very different install profiles:
- Atmospheric (natural draft): exhaust rises up through a B-vent or chimney. Cheapest install, requires existing chimney path. The Rheem Performance Platinum and the Bradford White RG250T6N both use this. About $850 install labor.
- Power vent: built-in fan pushes exhaust horizontally through PVC pipe out a side wall. No chimney needed. Adds $200–$500 to the install for the venting hardware and wall penetration. Right answer when no chimney access exists.
- Direct vent / condensing: sealed combustion, two-pipe PVC venting, captures latent heat from flue gases for UEF 0.85+ efficiency. Most efficient, highest install cost ($1,500–$2,800 above atmospheric). The AO Smith Vertex falls in this category.
If you have an existing atmospheric gas tank and a chimney that works, the cheapest replacement is another atmospheric tank. Switching to condensing for efficiency requires new PVC venting work and is a $1,000–$1,500 install premium that pays back in fuel savings over 6–10 years.
Brand-specific notes
Rheem: the volume leader. Performance Platinum (12-year warranty) is the default mid-market pick; Performance (6-year warranty) is the budget version; Fury is the entry tier. Available at Home Depot, installable by any plumber, warranty stands whether DIY or pro installed.
AO Smith: close second. Signature Premier (the Home Depot equivalent of Rheem's Performance Platinum) at $799. Their Vertex condensing line is the best mainstream condensing tank for households not ready to commit to tankless.
Bradford White: wholesale only. The trade favorite for self-installs (literally — plumbers buy these for their own homes). Skip if you DIY; the warranty requires professional install on the paperwork.
State, American, Whirlpool, US Craftmaster: all owned by AO Smith. Different brand badges, similar internals to mid-market AO Smith. Whirlpool specifically is the Lowe's house brand for gas water heaters.
