AO Smith ProLine XE 50-Gallon Power Vent Gas Water Heater Review

The AO Smith ProLine XE 50-Gallon Power Vent Gas is a power-vented version of AO Smith's mid-market gas tank, designed for installations where atmospheric venting isn't practical. The "Power Vent" feature uses an integrated fan to push exhaust horizontally through PVC piping out a side wall, eliminating the need for a chimney.

Specs: 50 gallons stored, 40,000 BTU input, UEF 0.66 (slightly higher than atmospheric due to better combustion control), 84-gallon first-hour rating, 6-year tank and 6-year parts warranty. Power-vent fan adds ~50W to operating energy consumption. ENERGY STAR certified.

Power-vent positioning is for installations where chimney access is unavailable — basement installs that previously used a long horizontal chimney chase that's failing, conversions of utility rooms with no chimney, or homes where the existing chimney is being removed for unrelated reasons. The horizontal side-wall venting via PVC adds about $200-$500 to install cost vs atmospheric but eliminates the chimney dependency.

Right buyer: replacement install where chimney is failing or being removed, conversions of utility rooms without chimney access, new construction where side-wall venting is preferred. About $899 unit, $1,800 installed. The Lowe's-channel equivalent is the AO Smith ProMax Power Vent at slightly lower warranty tier.

Pros
  • Natural gas combustion — faster recovery than electric resistance at comparable tank size
  • 50-gallon capacity — right-sized for 3–4 person households with standard usage patterns
Cons
  • Tank standby heat loss — tankless or heat-pump alternatives eliminate this continuous efficiency gap
