AO Smith Conservationist 40-Gallon Atmospheric Gas Water Heater (GCR-40)
AO Smith Conservationist 40-Gallon Atmospheric Gas Water Heater (GCR-40) Review
The AO Smith Conservationist GCR-40 is the 40-gallon version of the popular Conservationist 50-gallon (GCR-50), positioned as the mainstream natural-gas tank for smaller households (1–3 people) or for tight-space installs where 50-gallon dimensions do not fit.
Specs: 40,000 BTU input, UEF 0.62, 70-gallon first-hour rating, 6-year tank and 6-year parts warranty. Atmospheric B-vent. Self-cleaning dip tube, magnesium anode rod, electronic ignition with 120V power requirement, polyurethane foam insulation.
The 40-gallon capacity covers households of 1–3 people with sequential hot-water use. For households running overlapping showers or with kids old enough to use morning hot water simultaneously, the 50-gallon GCR-50 is the safer pick. The most common reason households end up with the GCR-40 instead of the GCR-50 is closet height — a 40-gallon is typically 52" tall versus 60" for a 50-gallon, which matters in older homes with utility closets built before standard appliance dimensions stabilized.
The GCR-40 competes directly with the Rheem Performance Platinum 40-gallon (12-year warranty vs the AO Smith's 6-year). For most primary-residence buyers, the Rheem warranty advantage is meaningful enough to swing the choice; the AO Smith holds market share primarily through Lowe's channel availability and through buyers with strong AO Smith brand preference.
About $549 unit at Lowe's, $1,350 installed. Like-for-like atmospheric tank replacement is a 90-minute plumber job; verify before ordering that the existing flue connection accepts the new unit's vent diameter (3" on most Conservationist units; older installs may have 4" connections that require an adapter).
