The American Water Heater ProLine is the brand's mainstream residential tank water heater lineup — the workhorse 6-year and 9-year tank tier offerings sold through Home Depot, Lowe's, and plumbing supply. Manufactured by A.O. Smith Corporation (American Water Heater Company is an A.O. Smith subsidiary brand), ProLine is the equivalent of A.O. Smith's similar-name lineup with American Water Heater branding.

ProLine variant lineup

  • ProLine Standard: 6-year tank warranty, basic features
  • ProLine Master: 9-year tank warranty, upgraded anode, improved insulation
  • ProLine XE: 12-year warranty tier, premium features (separate page)

What ProLine Standard includes

  • Glass-lined steel tank construction
  • Standard magnesium anode rod (3/4" NPT)
  • 4500W dual element (electric) or atmospheric burner (gas)
  • Polyurethane foam insulation (UEF rating varies by configuration)
  • Standard T&P relief valve
  • 6-year limited tank warranty

ProLine Master upgrades

Master tier adds: extended 9-year tank warranty, longer/improved anode rod design, slightly better insulation, and (on some configurations) Coregard anode technology (aluminum-zinc alloy that depletes 2-3x slower than standard magnesium).

Sizing and capacity

ProLine spans 30, 40, 50, 75, and 80-gallon capacities for both gas and electric configurations. Most common residential install is the 50-gallon electric or 40-gallon gas. Sizing decisions:

  • 30-gallon: studio or 1-bath apartment, light demand
  • 40-gallon: 1–2 person residence with single bath
  • 50-gallon: typical 2–3 bath residential
  • 75-gallon: heavy demand, 4+ bath, simultaneous shower demand
  • 80-gallon: high-end residential or light commercial

ProLine vs A.O. Smith Direct (same OEM, different branding)

ProLine and A.O. Smith ProLine are essentially identical products from the same manufacturing facilities. Differences:

  • Channel: American Water Heater ProLine sold primarily through Home Depot, Lowe's. A.O. Smith ProLine sold through Lowe's and plumbing supply.
  • Branding: aesthetic differences only — tank jacket color, label design
  • Warranty path: American Water Heater warranty routes through American Water Heater customer service initially. A.O. Smith routes directly. Functionally similar resolution times.
  • Pricing: often slightly different at retail (varies by promotion)

Common ProLine service items

  • Anode rod replacement: at year 5, more often with hard water
  • Element replacement (electric): typical at year 6–10
  • Gas valve replacement (gas): typical at year 7–10
  • T&P preventive replacement: at year 5
  • Thermostat: as needed, when high-limit trips persistently

ProLine installation

Standard residential install. Electric: 30A 240V circuit. Gas: appropriate gas line sizing and venting. Both: expansion tank on cold inlet, dielectric unions, T&P discharge routing, drain pan if above finished space. The 50-gallon ProLine weighs ~140 lbs empty.

Where ProLine pencils out

ProLine is the mainstream residential choice for buyers:

  • Replacing on emergency at Home Depot or Lowe's
  • Budget between $500-$900 for unit purchase
  • Planning 6–10 year ownership horizon
  • Single-bath or 2-bath residential demand patterns

Stepping up to ProLine Master vs ProLine Standard

The 9-year ProLine Master typically costs $100–200 more than the 6-year ProLine Standard. For long-term residence ownership, the Master tier is the better value — the warranty extension alone often justifies the premium, and the upgraded anode reduces maintenance work over the unit's life.
