What is the "rough-in" of a toilet?
The rough-in distance is the measurement from the finished wall behind the toilet (drywall surface — not the framing stud) to the center of the closet flange (the floor pipe that connects to the toilet drain). It determines which toilets will physically fit in your bathroom: the toilet bowl is engineered for a specific rough-in, and buying the wrong one means the supply line won't connect properly or the bowl won't sit flush against the wall.
The US standard rough-in is 12 inches. This is the dominant size in new construction from roughly 1970 to present. Toilets sold without specifying rough-in dimension are assumed to be 12-inch. If you're shopping a major retailer and the product page doesn't mention rough-in, it's almost certainly 12-inch.
10-inch and 14-inch rough-ins — when you'll see them
The two non-standard sizes are 10-inch and 14-inch. They appear in three scenarios:
- Pre-1970 construction — Many homes built before 1970 used a 10-inch rough-in as the standard. If your home is from the 1950s–1960s, especially if the toilet has never been replaced, there's a 25–40% chance you have a 10-inch rough-in.
- Tight bathrooms — A 10-inch rough-in moves the toilet 2 inches closer to the wall, freeing up 2 inches of bathroom floor space. Some builders specify 10-inch rough-ins in cramped powder rooms and tight primary bathrooms even in new construction.
- Commercial-to-residential conversions — Older commercial buildings converted to residential lofts sometimes have 14-inch rough-ins. The extra space accommodated commercial flush mechanisms that needed more clearance.
How to measure your existing rough-in
The most accurate method: with the toilet still installed, measure from the finished wall surface (drywall, tile, or paneling — not the baseboard) to the center of the closet bolts. These are the two silver bolts at the base of the toilet, often hidden under decorative caps. The distance to the center of those bolts equals the distance to the center of the closet flange.
If the bolts aren't visible (decorative caps or floor sealant covering them), the approximation method: measure from the wall to the closest visible point of the toilet base, then add approximately 5.5 inches (a typical bowl curvature). This is less accurate but gives a working number for shopping. Pre-measure twice to confirm.
If you're remodeling and the existing toilet is removed: measure directly from the finished wall to the center of the closet flange (the white plastic or metal ring sitting flush with the floor). This is the most accurate measurement.
What to do if your rough-in is 10" or 14"
Major brands (Kohler, TOTO, American Standard) offer 10-inch and 14-inch rough-in variants of their popular models, sold as separate SKUs. Examples:
- Kohler Cimarron — available in 10-inch (Cimarron 10), 12-inch (standard), and 14-inch (Cimarron 14) rough-in variants.
- Kohler Highline — same three rough-in variants.
- TOTO Drake — Drake 10 (10-inch rough-in) and Drake 14 (14-inch rough-in) sold as separate SKUs.
- American Standard Cadet 3 — 10-inch and 14-inch rough-in variants available, sold by Home Depot and Lowe's online but rarely stocked in-store.
Expect to pay 15–25% more for a non-12-inch rough-in toilet, and order online — local big-box stores don't stock these variants on the shelf.
Should you re-plumb to convert to 12-inch?
Possible, but expensive. A plumber would cut the existing drain line, install a new closet flange 2 inches further from the wall, and rebuild the floor structure around the new flange location. Typical cost: $800–$1,500 in addition to any flooring repair. Not worth it unless you're already doing a full bathroom renovation that includes new flooring and finishes.
Alternative: an offset closet flange ($30–$80) sits over the existing flange and shifts the toilet bolt locations by up to 2 inches. This is a workable solution for converting a 10-inch rough-in opening to accommodate a standard 12-inch rough-in toilet — but the supply line still has to reach, and bowl-to-wall clearance still matters. Verify both with the offset flange in place before ordering the toilet.
What happens if you buy the wrong rough-in
If you install a 12-inch rough-in toilet in a 10-inch rough-in flange, the toilet will sit too far from the wall (a 2-inch gap behind the tank) and the supply line will be 2 inches too long, which is usually OK because supply lines are flexible. The visual result is unattractive but functional.
If you install a 10-inch rough-in toilet in a 12-inch rough-in flange, the toilet sits 2 inches into the room from where it should — meaning the back of the tank is 2 inches off the wall but the front of the bowl is now intruding into the bathroom floor space. The supply line might not reach. This is worse than the previous case.
In both cases, the toilet will function but will look wrong and possibly fail building inspection on a permitted renovation. Always measure before buying.
