Most Moen showerheads ship at 2.5 GPM (gallons per minute), which is the federal WaterSense maximum for non-restricted showerheads. States with stricter efficiency rules (California, Colorado) require 1.75 GPM or lower -- check your state code before purchasing. The Immersion spray technology in the Velocity line produces noticeably higher perceived pressure at 2.5 GPM than a standard nozzle design at the same flow rate, which is why the Velocity feels stronger than many competitors at equivalent GPM.
Fixed vs handheld -- when each is right
A fixed showerhead (Velocity, Invigorator) is simpler, lower maintenance, and has fewer failure points. A handheld adds rinsing flexibility for bathing children, washing pets, rinsing the shower enclosure, and accommodation for mobility limitations. Moen's Magnetix dock makes the handheld re-dock experience significantly easier than friction-hold or clip-hold systems. If the primary user has any mobility limitation, default to a Magnetix combination unit. If no handheld use case applies, save $30-$50 by choosing a fixed head.
Finish selection -- Spot Resist vs Chrome
Moen's Spot Resist Brushed Nickel finish uses a PVD (physical vapor deposition) coating that resists fingerprints and water spot accumulation. In a bathroom with a clear glass shower enclosure or high-traffic use, the difference in daily cleaning effort is meaningful -- the brushed nickel requires a weekly wipe-down versus near-daily polishing for polished chrome. Chrome is the correct choice for matching existing chrome fixtures or for installation in a steam shower where water spotting is less visible. Spray patterns -- what the settings actually mean
Most Moen showerheads offer 2-5 spray settings. The practical ones used by 90% of buyers are: full spray (standard shower experience) and pause (shuts flow to a trickle while soaping up, saving 2-3 gallons per shower). The pause function is on every Moen showerhead with the red indicator ring and is the most underappreciated feature in the lineup. Massage settings (pulsing) relieve muscle tension but use more water per perceived unit of coverage.
