The Swiss Madison Plaisir (SM-AB522) is an undermount bathtub designed to be installed within a custom tile or stone surround -- the type of installation where the tub rim sits below the deck surface, creating the seamless spa-like appearance associated with high-end master bath renovations. This installation type is more labor-intensive than an alcove or freestanding install but produces the cleanest visual result when the tile work is executed well.

The Plaisir is 59 inches by 29.5 inches with a soaking depth of 14 inches. The acrylic shell has a flat rim flange that seats against the underside of the deck; the installer cuts the deck opening to match the tub's interior dimensions, sets the tub on the support structure, and tiles over the rim. Center drain is standard -- the drain rough-in must be centered in the tub footprint before the floor is finished.

Installation requirements

When to choose undermount over freestanding

Undermount installation produces a built-in, permanent installation with a different visual outcome than freestanding. Freestanding tubs are the focal point of the room -- they draw the eye. Undermount tubs integrate with the surround -- the tile work or stone is the focal point, and the tub is a component of the composition. For master baths with statement tile or stone work, undermount is the correct choice. For master baths that want a dramatic centerpiece, freestanding is the right direction.
