Kohler Bellwether 60" x 30.25" Alcove Bath
Kohler Bellwether 60" x 30.25" Alcove Bath Review
Kohler Bellwether -- classic alcove with 30" width
The Kohler Bellwether (K-875) is the narrower sibling to the Underscore RL, designed for the 60"x30" alcove openings common in homes built before 1985 when the 30-inch width was the residential standard. At 30.25 inches wide versus the Underscore RL's 32 inches, the Bellwether is the correct replacement for a standard three-wall alcove in those older homes -- and at a lower price point than the Underscore, it is a practical, quality choice for renovations where the tub is primarily used for showering with occasional soaking.
Construction uses Kohler's cast-acrylic process: liquid acrylic is vacuum-formed over a mold and reinforced with fiberglass matting, producing a shell with greater structural integrity and surface hardness than standard thermoformed acrylic. The Bellwether's soaking depth is 14.5 inches -- lower than the Underscore RL's 17.5 inches but adequate for a standard bath. The integral right-hand or left-hand apron (specify by variant) eliminates the tile apron build-out and makes the Bellwether a straightforward swap for an existing alcove tub.
Styling and finish options
The Bellwether uses a classic rectangular styling with a slightly sloped back -- less pronounced lumbar support than the Underscore RL, but adequate for a standard bath experience. Finish options: white (suffix -0), almond (suffix -47), biscuit (suffix -96). The white Bellwether is among Kohler's best-selling alcove products because the classic rectangular geometry matches virtually any tile pattern.
Installation
The K-875 installs in a 60"x30" three-wall alcove. Standard installation: mortar bed set, level verification, drain connection to 1.5" PVC waste line, then tile up the surround. Kohler's Ballast installation system (sold separately) provides a reinforced installation method without a mortar bed. The Bellwether is rated for a shower system -- the integral apron and deck are designed to handle splash and standing water from a shower head mounted above.
Bellwether vs Underscore RL
The choice between the Bellwether and Underscore RL is primarily about alcove width and soaking depth priorities. If the existing rough opening is 30", the Bellwether is the right size; if the opening is 32" or can be framed out to 32", the Underscore RL delivers a superior soaking experience. For a pure shower-over-tub combination where soaking depth is secondary, the Bellwether at lower cost is the pragmatic choice. For an owner-occupied master bath where soaking is the primary use, the Underscore RL's 17.5" depth and lumbar support justify the additional investment.
