Navien Control Board — Failure Modes & Replacement

The Navien PCB orchestrates ignition, modulation, and safety. Erratic behavior and unusual code combinations suggest PCB failure.

Updated May 2026 · Navien Water Heaters

The Navien PCB is the unit's central computer. Reads sensors, drives gas valve, runs ignition, manages modulation, talks to NaviLink, logs faults. When it fails, behavior becomes erratic and codes don't map cleanly.

Symptoms suggesting PCB failure

  • Multiple unrelated error codes in rapid succession
  • Display garbled or blank with power confirmed
  • Random restarts mid-operation
  • Buttons not responding
  • Modulation not happening (burner stuck at one fire level despite setpoint changes)
  • NaviLink connects but shows no data

Diagnose by elimination

PCB failure is the diagnosis of last resort. Work through the relevant code's diagnostic sequence first. PCBs are robust and rarely fail before year 8-10.

Replacement

Dealer-only. PCBs come pre-flashed with model-specific firmware. The NSS:

  1. Removes old PCB
  2. Installs pre-flashed new PCB
  3. Transfers settings from old PCB if partially functional
  4. Verifies sensor calibration
  5. Tests under load
  6. Updates firmware to latest via NaviLink

Cost

  • OEM PCB: $400-800 model-dependent
  • Labor: $250-500
  • Total: $650-1,300

Firmware updates

Navien pushes updates through NaviLink. Updates fix modulation glitches, improve recirculation algorithms, patch security in the Wi-Fi module. Always run latest firmware before assuming PCB hardware failure.

Warranty

5-year NPE parts warranty includes PCB. Some PCB failures in years 6-10 eligible for Navien goodwill replacement — call and ask. Outside warranty, PCB cost approaches 30-40% of new unit.

Bottom line

10+ year-old unit with PCB failure → replacement makes more sense than repair. Inside warranty → replace the PCB.
