Navien Water Heater Age Lookup — Decode Your Serial Number

How to decode a Navien serial number to find the manufacture date — for warranty status, replacement planning, home inspections.

Updated May 2026 · Navien Water Heaters

Navien serial numbers encode the manufacture date. Useful when you bought a house and need to know if the unit is mid-warranty or near end-of-life.

Where to find the serial number

  • Data plate on the side of the unit
  • NaviLink app — paired units show serial under details
  • Installation paperwork if available
  • Original packaging sticker for new installs

Decoding format

Navien serials are typically 11-13 characters. The structure embeds:

  • Year of manufacture — the 1st-2nd or 2nd-3rd characters encode year. Format varies by generation
  • Month of manufacture — 1-2 characters following year
  • Factory + sequence — remaining characters

Most current NPE-A2 / S2 (post-2018) follow this pattern: characters 2-3 = year (e.g., "23" = 2023, "22" = 2022); characters 4-5 = month (01-12); remainder is sequence. Legacy NPE-A (2014-2018) used a slightly different format with letter prefixes.

Easiest way: ask Navien

If the format is unclear, call 1-800-519-8794 with the serial number. They will lookup the manufacture date in seconds. Or, if the unit is paired to NaviLink, the install date is visible in the app.

Warranty implications

Warranty runs from install date if registered; from manufacture date if not. Decoding manufacture date is most useful when you don't have registration paperwork — it tells you the latest possible warranty start. Warranty hub for the rules.

Bottom line

If you can't decode the serial directly, call Navien with the number. They are responsive on age-lookup calls — under 5 minutes typical resolution.
