Lochinvar Part

Lochinvar Stainless Fire-Tube Heat Exchanger

Primary heat exchanger for NOBLE, KNIGHT, ARMOR. Expensive component — annual service keeps warranty active.

Updated May 2026 · Lochinvar Water Heaters

The fire-tube heat exchanger is the most expensive component in a Lochinvar combi or condensing commercial water heater. Replacement is typically warranty-covered when annual professional service has been documented — and not covered when it hasn\'t.

How it works

  • Stainless steel fire-tube design — combustion gas inside the tubes, water surrounding
  • Counter-flow heat transfer for maximum efficiency
  • Condensing operation — flue gas cools below dewpoint inside the exchanger, releasing latent heat
  • Acidic condensate requires neutralization on commercial installs

Why annual service matters

  • Year 1-2 without service: light combustion residue; no symptoms
  • Year 3-5 without service: significant fouling reduces efficiency 5-10%; CO climbing
  • Year 5+ without service: heat exchanger temperature climbing; E29 high-limit faults
  • Eventually: stress cracks in tubes from thermal shock + fouling = exchanger failure

Symptoms of impending failure

  • Repeated E29 high-limit lockouts
  • Visible water leak from cabinet (heat exchanger crack)
  • Combustion analyzer shows persistent abnormal readings despite trim adjustment
  • Audible thumping or "kettling" sounds (scale-related thermal stress)

Warranty replacement

  • Within heat exchanger warranty (5-yr NOBLE, 10-yr KNIGHT/ARMOR) AND annual service documented = covered
  • Annual service not documented = denial
  • Out-of-warranty: $1,500-2,500 part + $400-700 labor = $1,900-3,200 total. Compare against full unit replacement before committing

Replacement procedure

This is full-day contractor work:

  1. Drain unit
  2. Disconnect gas, vent, condensate, water, electrical
  3. Pull unit from wall
  4. Disassemble cabinet
  5. Replace heat exchanger assembly
  6. Reassemble, reinstall, restart commissioning (including combustion analysis)

How to maximize heat exchanger life

  1. Annual professional service — non-negotiable
  2. Water softener in hard water areas — protects the DHW plate exchanger but also reduces sediment carried through the system loop
  3. Properly sized expansion tank — prevents pressure cycling stress
  4. Primary-secondary piping (boiler bypass) on radiant systems — prevents thermal shock from cold return water
  5. Air separator on system supply — air bubbles in the heat exchanger cause hot spots
  6. Quality water glycol mix (radiant systems) — corrosion inhibitor protects exchanger

Bottom line

The heat exchanger is the heart of the Lochinvar unit. Annual service keeps it healthy and the warranty active. Skipping service is the biggest financial mistake a Lochinvar owner can make — $400/year service preserves a $2,000+ part.
