Home Depot Water Heaters — Brands, Prices, Install Service

What Home Depot stocks for water heaters — brand mix, typical pricing, install service through HD's contractor network, and how it compares to other channels.

Updated May 2026 · Water Heaters

Home Depot is the largest US water heater retailer by volume. Most homeowners reflexively start their water-heater search there — and HD is a legitimate option for many installs. This page covers what HD actually carries, how their install service works, and where they're competitive vs other channels.

Brand mix at Home Depot

Home Depot's water heater catalog is dominated by Rheem (the headline brand) plus a few other lines:

  • Rheem Performance, Performance Plus, Performance Platinum — the volume gas and electric tanks. See Rheem lineup
  • Rheem ProTerra hybrid (heat pump)
  • Rheem RTGH tankless (gas condensing)
  • Rheem Marathon — high-end electric with composite tank, lifetime warranty
  • EcoSmart electric tankless (point-of-use and whole-house)
  • GE-branded tanks (relabeled Rheem in most cases)
  • RUUD (Rheem's contractor-channel brand)
  • Some State brand presence (AO Smith subsidiary) in select markets

Notably absent or limited:

  • Bradford White — plumber-channel only; not sold at Home Depot
  • Rinnai Sensei / Sensei RX — limited stock; usually only Value Series (V65, V75, V94)
  • Navien NPE-A2 / NCB — limited; combi boilers rarely in stock
  • AO Smith — sold under State or ProMax branding rather than AO Smith proper

Pricing

Home Depot pricing is competitive with online channels for the brands they stock — generally within 5-10% of Amazon and direct-from-Rheem pricing. The savings vs a plumbing wholesaler are real for Rheem; for brands HD doesn't stock, the wholesaler or brand-trained installer is the better channel.

ModelHD price (2026 est)
Rheem Performance 40-gal gas$650-850
Rheem Performance 50-gal gas$700-950
Rheem Performance Platinum 50-gal gas$950-1,300
Rheem Performance 50-gal electric$500-700
Rheem ProTerra 65-gal hybrid$1,700-2,400
Rheem RTGH-95 tankless$1,400-1,800
Rheem Marathon 50-gal electric$1,500-1,900

Home Services install

Home Depot's Home Services program connects you with contractors who install your purchase. The structure:

  1. Buy the unit at Home Depot (in-store or online)
  2. Schedule the install through HD Home Services
  3. HD subcontracts to a local plumber from their network
  4. Install includes: removal of old unit, delivery, installation, permit (in most jurisdictions)
  5. HD charges a single bundled price covering the unit + install

Bundled price comparison

ConfigurationHD bundled (typical)Same install via local plumber direct
50-gal gas tank, same-fuel swap$1,500-2,200$1,200-1,900
50-gal electric tank, swap$1,200-1,800$1,000-1,600
Heat pump hybrid 65-gal$3,000-4,200$2,500-3,800
Tankless conversion$4,500-6,500$3,500-5,500

HD's bundled install typically runs $300-1,000 more than going direct to a local plumber for the same unit. The convenience premium pays for: single-point-of-contact, financing, warranty workflow, and the lower-friction-experience.

When Home Depot makes sense

  • Emergency replacement — unit died, you need hot water tomorrow. HD has same-day install slots in most metros
  • You want financing — HD offers 12-month 0% promotional financing frequently
  • You'd choose Rheem anyway — for that brand, HD's a competitive channel
  • You don't have a regular plumber and don't want to vet one
  • You're buying a heat pump hybrid — HD's volume on ProTerra means knowledgeable Home Services contractors

When to skip Home Depot

  • You want Bradford White, Rinnai Sensei, or Navien — go to a manufacturer-trained installer or plumbing wholesaler instead
  • You have a regular plumber you trust — direct relationship is cheaper and faster
  • Complex install — tankless conversion, combi boiler, anything with unusual venting. Manufacturer-trained installer is meaningfully better than HD's generic plumber network
  • You're optimizing for cost — local plumbers typically beat HD's bundle pricing by $300-1,000

Home Depot vs Lowe's

Similar overall offering. HD has a stronger Rheem partnership; Lowe's has historically pushed more AO Smith / State / Whirlpool brands. Install services are roughly equivalent. See Lowe's water heaters.

Returns and warranty

HD's return policy on water heaters: 90 days for unused units in original packaging. After installation, you're working with the manufacturer's warranty (Rheem's, in most cases), not HD's return policy. Keep your receipt and registration.

Rebates and financing at HD

HD applies manufacturer rebates at checkout for some heat pump models (Rheem ProTerra). Federal IRA tax credits are NOT applied at the register — you claim them on your tax return separately (Form 5695). See rebates and tax credits.

Bottom line

Home Depot is competitive for Rheem and OK for emergency replacements. Convenient single-point-of-contact via Home Services, with a $300-1,000 premium over local-plumber-direct. For Bradford White, Rinnai Sensei, or Navien NPE-A2 — skip HD and find a manufacturer-trained installer.
