Water Heater Dip Tube

When hot water runs out fast, broken dip tube is the most likely cause. $5-15 fix.

Updated May 2026 · Water Heaters

The dip tube is a plastic tube extending from the cold water inlet down to about 8 inches above the bottom of the tank. It directs incoming cold water to the bottom so it can be heated, instead of mixing with hot water at the top. When the dip tube breaks, "hot water runs out fast" — your tap delivers only the top few inches of hot water before cold takes over.

Symptoms of broken dip tube

  • Hot water runs out in 5 minutes instead of usual 25
  • Sudden onset (yesterday fine, today broken)
  • Tank size, thermostat setting all unchanged
  • Recovery rate seems normal — but you never get a full tank of hot
  • Sometimes accompanied by white plastic flakes at faucet aerators

Why dip tubes fail

  • Plastic embrittlement — 10+ years of hot water exposure makes plastic brittle
  • 1993-1997 manufacturing defect — bad plastic batch affected multiple brands; nearly all units from that period eventually failed
  • Water hammer — repeated pressure shock cracks the tube
  • Hot recirculation — constant flow stresses the tube

Replacement procedure

  1. Turn off heat source. Gas: "Off" or "Pilot." Electric: breaker off
  2. Close cold water inlet shutoff above the tank
  3. Open a hot tap upstairs to break vacuum
  4. Drain ~5 gallons via the drain valve (lowers water below the inlet)
  5. Disconnect the cold water inlet nipple at the top of the tank — union, flex connector, or threaded
  6. The dip tube either pulls out with the nipple OR remains seated in the cold inlet opening
  7. Pull out the dip tube — note its length (typically 40-50")
  8. Inspect: cracked, split, or only fragments = confirmed failure
  9. Cut new universal dip tube to length if needed (most come pre-cut to 40")
  10. Insert new dip tube into the cold inlet opening
  11. Reconnect inlet nipple with fresh Teflon tape
  12. Restore cold water; refill tank fully; close hot tap when steady flow returns
  13. Restore power/gas

Dip tube options

  • Standard polypropylene: $5-10. Adequate for most installs
  • CPVC-equivalent: $10-15. Better hot-water resistance for high-temperature installs
  • Curved-end (anti-sediment): $10-20. Outlet angled to stir sediment as cold water enters — reduces sediment buildup. Best for hard water and Marathon-style tanks

Cleanup: aerators

If white plastic flakes accumulated in your plumbing from the broken dip tube, clean each fixture\'s aerator after replacement:

  1. Unscrew aerator from faucet tip
  2. Rinse plastic debris
  3. Soak in vinegar 30 minutes if scale also present
  4. Reinstall

Shower heads may need flow restrictor removal and cleaning. Dishwasher and washing machine inlet screens also benefit.

Bottom line

If hot water suddenly runs out fast, replace the dip tube before suspecting anything else. $5-15 fix. 30-minute DIY. Universal water heater dip tubes fit virtually all brands at the correct length.
