Winterizing a Dometic RV water heater is critical for any RV stored in temperatures that may drop below 32°F. Failure to winterize properly is the single largest cause of RV water heater damage — freeze-damaged tanks rarely survive even one freeze event, and Dometic explicitly excludes freeze damage from warranty coverage.
When to winterize
Begin winterizing before the first sustained freeze of the season. In northern climates, this typically means late October through early November. In milder climates with occasional brief freezes, winterize before any forecast that includes overnight temperatures below 32°F. Even one freeze event with water in the tank can crack welds.
Full winterization procedure for Dometic units
Step 1: Drain the tank completely
- Turn off propane supply
- Turn off electric water heater switch
- Allow tank to cool (at least 2 hours after last use)
- Open the access panel
- Open the T&P relief valve to break vacuum
- Remove the anode rod or drain plug at the base
- Allow full drain — 6 gallons takes 5–10 minutes
Step 2: Move bypass valves to "bypass" position
Dometic RV water heaters typically have a 3-valve bypass system. Move all three valves to their winter position:
- Cold inlet valve: closed (water cannot enter tank)
- Hot outlet valve: closed (no draw from tank)
- Bypass valve: open (cold supply bypasses tank, goes directly to hot side)
Verify the bypass is correctly configured by checking that water from the freshwater system reaches hot fixtures without entering the tank.
Step 3: Reinstall drain plug or anode
Wrap threads with Teflon tape, install hand-tight plus 1/4 turn with wrench. Don't overtighten — over-torque damages the threads.
Step 4: Run RV antifreeze through freshwater system
- Add RV-specific pink propylene glycol antifreeze to the freshwater system inlet
- Activate the freshwater pump (or pressurize from city water)
- Open each hot fixture (sink, shower) until pink antifreeze flows out
- Open each cold fixture until pink antifreeze flows out
- Continue until antifreeze reaches all faucets, including outdoor shower and rear sink if equipped
Step 5: Verify and document
Take photos: tank drained, bypass valves in winter position, antifreeze flowing from hot fixtures. These photos serve as warranty-claim evidence if a freeze event later damages the unit — proves you took proper winterization steps.
De-winterizing in spring
- Drain antifreeze from freshwater system (run all fixtures until water runs clear)
- Flush freshwater system with fresh water (multiple cycles to remove antifreeze residue)
- Move bypass valves back to "in use" position
- Fill tank slowly via cold inlet (verify no leaks)
- Open hot faucet to release air; wait for steady water flow
- Verify tank fills completely
- Turn on propane and/or electric power
- Verify heating and normal operation
Common winterization mistakes
- Forgetting to bypass: antifreeze enters the tank, contaminates the storage volume, and requires extensive flushing in spring
- Using automotive antifreeze: automotive antifreeze is toxic (ethylene glycol); only use RV-rated propylene glycol
- Partial drain: any residual water in the tank can freeze and crack welds
- Storing with access panel ajar: mice nest in damp insulation, damage wiring
- Skipping bypass valve verification: visually confirm valves are in correct position — easy to miss
When to skip winterization
If your RV is stored in a heated facility maintained above 40°F, full winterization isn't required. Verify the facility temperature monitoring is reliable; one power outage in a heated storage facility during a hard freeze still damages units. Most full-time RVers in southern climates winterize annually as insurance even if temperatures rarely drop below freezing.
