Westinghouse Drain Valve — Upgrade to Brass

Replace plastic OEM drain valve with ¾" brass ball valve after first flush. Universal water heater part.

Updated May 2026 · Westinghouse Water Heaters

Westinghouse storage tanks (like virtually every other tank brand) ship with a plastic drain valve. Plastic valves seize over time from thermal cycling and mineral buildup. The best Westinghouse maintenance upgrade is replacing the plastic valve with a brass ball valve after the first annual flush.

Why plastic fails

  • Polypropylene handle becomes brittle from thermal cycling
  • Mineral scale builds inside the valve seat
  • Compression fit at tank thread loosens over years
  • Once seized, forcing the handle often cracks the valve body

What you need

  • ¾" brass full-port ball valve (NPT male × hose thread female)
  • Pipe wrench (2)
  • Teflon tape
  • Bucket

Replacement procedure (after first annual flush)

  1. Power off at breaker; verify with voltage tester
  2. Close cold water inlet shutoff
  3. Drain tank completely via existing plastic drain valve
  4. Once empty, remove plastic valve: hold tank fitting with one wrench, unscrew valve with other
  5. Clean tank threads
  6. Apply Teflon tape (4-5 wraps clockwise) to brass valve threads
  7. Install brass valve, hand-tight plus 1-2 turns
  8. Attach hose adapter if needed
  9. Close brass valve handle
  10. Restore cold inlet; refill; check for leaks
  11. Restore power only after tank confirmed full

Benefits of brass upgrade

  • Never seizes — brass ball valves last decades
  • Faster drain — full-port ¾" vs restricted plastic seat
  • Hose threads usable without thread damage
  • Replaceable in the future if needed

Cost

  • ¾" brass ball valve (NPT × hose): $12-18
  • Hose adapter: $3-5
  • Teflon tape: $2
  • Plumber labor if hired: $40-80 (often bundled with annual flush)

Bottom line

Best $15-20 Westinghouse upgrade. Brass ball valve never seizes, drains faster, lasts decades. Standard procedure on all tank brands — Westinghouse stainless tanks are no exception.
