The HTP Versa Hydro is a unique product — a combination water heater that uses a single tank for both potable hot water and hydronic space heating. Unlike a combi boiler that's tankless on the DHW side, Versa Hydro stores hot water in a tank and uses it for both DHW and heating loop service via internal heat exchanger.

How Versa Hydro is different

Traditional approach: separate boiler for heating + separate water heater for DHW. Modern combi: tankless instantaneous heating + tankless instantaneous DHW from one unit. Versa Hydro: storage tank holds hot water at boiler-loop temperature (~140–160°F), which serves as both the heat source for radiant or baseboard heating and (via internal copper coil) as the heat source for potable DHW.

Where Versa Hydro shines

Hydronic radiant floor heating works best at moderate water temperatures (110–130°F). A traditional boiler running hot to satisfy DHW priority cycles inefficiently; Versa Hydro keeps stored water at a moderate temperature appropriate for both functions. Radiant comfort + DHW capacity from one unit, with less cycling than separate systems.

Sizing and capacity

Versa Hydro VH-99 has 50-gallon stored capacity at 99,000 BTU/hr input. Larger VH-130 and VH-160 sizes scale up. For typical 2-bath residential with hydronic heating, VH-99 handles both functions adequately. For larger homes or homes with high simultaneous DHW peak, sizing up matters.

DHW capacity

The internal copper coil heats domestic water on demand from the stored tank water. Capacity depends on stored water temperature and incoming cold temperature. At 145°F stored / 50°F cold inlet / 120°F outlet target, VH-99 delivers approximately 4 GPM continuous. The 50-gallon buffer also handles instantaneous peaks beyond steady-state coil capacity.

Installation specifics

Versa Hydro install requires:

  • Gas line sized for 99,000+ BTU/hr
  • Sealed combustion venting (condensing model)
  • Heating loop connections (typically 1" to manifold)
  • DHW connections (3/4" cold inlet and hot outlet)
  • Circulator pump for heating loop (often integrated)
  • Condensate drain with neutralizer
  • 120V electrical
  • Expansion tank on cold inlet

Heating loop temperature management

The stored tank temperature dictates heating loop supply temperature. For radiant systems, 120–130°F is comfortable; for baseboard, 160–180°F may be needed. Versa Hydro can be operated at higher temperatures, but this slightly reduces DHW efficiency. Adjustable setpoint allows tuning to the heating system type.

Versa Hydro vs UFT Combi

  • Versa Hydro: stored tank, better for radiant heating, simultaneous heating + DHW handled better
  • UFT Combi: tankless DHW, smaller footprint, lower upfront cost, better for baseboard heating

For radiant + DHW combination installations, Versa Hydro is typically the better choice. For baseboard heating + average DHW, UFT Combi is more cost-effective.

Service life

Versa Hydro tanks have similar service life to other condensing tank water heaters — 12–18 years typical. Glass-lined tank with anode rod requires standard maintenance. Heat exchanger inspection every 3–5 years for condensing efficiency verification.
