EcoSmart POU 3.5 3.5 kW Point-of-Use Electric Tankless
EcoSmart POU 3.5 3.5 kW Point-of-Use Electric Tankless Review
The EcoSmart POU 3.5 is a point-of-use electric tankless designed to feed a single low-demand fixture — a remote bathroom sink, a powder room handwash basin, a workshop utility tap. At 3.5 kW (single 20-amp double-pole breaker, 15 amps continuous), it produces about 0.5 GPM at a 40°F rise — enough for handwash use but explicitly not enough for a shower or dish-filling sink.
The use case is specific. Where a remote bathroom is 60+ feet from the main water heater, every hot-water draw wastes 1–2 gallons of cold water in the supply line before usable hot water reaches the tap. Adding a small point-of-use unit at the remote fixture eliminates the wait and the waste. Compared to recirculation (more expensive plumbing, continuous standby cost), the POU unit is the cheaper retrofit solution for individual remote fixtures.
Build: stainless steel heat exchanger, brass connections, lifetime warranty on the heat exchanger, 5-year warranty on electronics — the same warranty structure as the larger ECO line. The 20-amp 240V circuit requirement is modest enough that most homes can accommodate it; the install is otherwise straightforward (1/2" NPT water connections, wall-mount bracket, 4-inch by 7-inch footprint).
Not the right product for: showers (insufficient capacity), kitchen sinks where pots are filled (insufficient flow rate for high-volume tasks), or any fixture in a cold climate where the source water is below 40°F. The POU 6 (6 kW) is the right step up for slightly more demand; the ECO 8 (8 kW) handles small showers in mild climates.
