When you need an auger instead of a plunger
A plunger uses water pressure to dislodge clogs in or near the toilet trapway. It works for 90% of clogs. The other 10% are caused by:
- Solid objects (toys, phones, deodorant containers, dental floss containers) lodged in the trapway
- Excessive paper wads that have compacted past the plunger\'s reach
- Wipes (even "flushable" wipes accumulate)
- Mineral or root intrusion further down the drain line
For these, you need a mechanical snake that physically reaches the obstruction and either grabs it or breaks it apart.
Closet auger vs drum auger
Closet auger (3-6 feet): the standard toilet auger. Rigid handle with a flexible spring cable rotated by a crank. Reaches the entire trapway and the first few feet of drain line beyond. Plumber cost: $90-180 for a service call.
Drum auger (15-25 feet): for deeper clogs past the trapway. Larger machine with a motor-driven cable. Plumber cost: $150-300.
Main-line auger / hydro-jet: for clogs in the main drain line (often root intrusion). Cost: $200-600+. Usually only needed when multiple drains in the house are slow.
Cost breakdown
| Service | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Closet auger only (trapway clog) | $90-180 |
| Drum auger (deeper drain line) | $150-300 |
| Camera inspection | $150-450 |
| Auger + pulling toilet to clear from drain side | $220-450 |
| Removing foreign object from trapway | $150-400 |
| Main line clearing (root cutting) | $250-700 |
What a service call includes
- Initial diagnosis and confirmation that auger is the right tool
- Auger insertion through toilet bowl
- Working the cable through the obstruction
- Confirmation of clearing (multiple flushes without backup)
- Cleanup of work area
When the clog is deeper than the auger reaches
If a closet auger doesn\'t clear it, the obstruction is past the toilet\'s trapway — in the drain line under the floor. Pro will either: (1) move to a drum auger from a downstream cleanout, (2) pull the toilet and snake from the drain side, or (3) recommend camera inspection to identify the obstruction\'s nature and location.
If multiple drains in your house are slow at the same time, the issue is in the main drain line — typically root intrusion or significant pipe damage. A toilet auger won\'t help; you need main-line service.
DIY auger rental option
Home Depot and Lowes rent closet augers for $15-25 per day. If you can identify the clog as being in the trapway (you can\'t feel anything moving when you plunge), renting an auger and DIYing saves the service call. For anything deeper, hire it out.
