Detailed Comparison

Same brand, same capacity, completely different products. The Marathon is Rheem's premium polybuthylene-tank electric water heater. The Performance is Rheem's mainstream glass-lined-steel electric. They cost roughly 3× different prices and have wildly different service lives. This comparison is mostly a question of how long you intend to live in the house.

The 30-second answer

The Marathon has a lifetime tank warranty (literally — as long as you own the home where it was installed) because the tank cannot rust through. The Performance has a 6-year tank warranty and a real-world life of 10–14 years. If you stay in the house long enough to need a second Performance, you should have bought a Marathon the first time. Break-even is roughly 11 years.

Tank construction is the entire story

A standard glass-lined-steel water heater fails through one mechanism: the porcelain lining inside the steel tank develops a micro-crack, water reaches the bare steel, and corrosion spreads. The anode rod buys time by sacrificially corroding before the tank does, but eventually the rod depletes and the tank rusts through. Lifespan in soft water with anode replacement: 12–15 years. In hard water without anode maintenance: 6–9 years.

The Marathon's tank is wound polybuthylene (a fiberglass-reinforced plastic). It cannot rust because there is no iron to oxidize. The lifetime warranty is therefore not a marketing flourish — Rheem actually believes the tank will outlive the building. Real-world Marathons installed in the early 1990s are still in service.

Weight and serviceability

The Marathon weighs 70 lbs empty. The Performance weighs 130 lbs empty. Both weigh roughly 510 lbs full. The weight difference matters for one person doing a basement-to-attic relocation, and it matters significantly for upstairs closet installations where the floor framing was sized for the lighter unit. If you are replacing a Marathon with a Performance you may need to verify floor loading.

The Marathon has no anode rod. You do not need to inspect or replace one. The Performance has a magnesium anode rod that should be inspected every 3–4 years and replaced when depleted to maintain warranty.
