Best Water Heater Temperature

3 expert-curated picks ranked by performance, value, and long-term reliability

Water heater temperature should be set to 120°F (49°C) for the majority of US households. This page covers the why, the exceptions, and how to actually measure and adjust your unit's temperature.

Why 120°F is the recommendation

Endorsed by the EPA, OSHA, CPSC, and major medical organizations. Four factors balance at 120°F:

  • Scald risk: third-degree burn in 5 minutes at 120°F vs 5 seconds at 140°F.
  • Energy use: each 10°F reduction saves ~3-5% standby losses, about $40/year.
  • Mineral precipitation: hotter water accelerates calcium and magnesium scale buildup.
  • Legionella protection: bacteria killed above 122°F; 120°F is at the lower bound of safe.

When to set higher than 120°F

  • Older dishwasher without internal heater: set to 125-130°F. Modern dishwashers internally heat regardless of supply temp.
  • Long pipe runs causing tepid delivery: set to 130°F at heater, or add thermostatic mixing valve.
  • Immunocompromised household member: set to 140°F with mixing valves at fixtures.
  • Vacation home with sporadic use: set to 140°F when occupied to kill any Legionella accumulated during stagnant periods.

Why setpoints below 120°F are dangerous

Legionella bacteria multiply between 86°F and 113°F. Showers aerosolize the water and deliver bacteria directly to the lungs — Legionnaires' disease. The energy savings from settings below 120°F ($15-$25/year) are not worth this risk.

Measure your actual delivery, not the dial

The dial setting can differ from actual delivered temperature by 5-15°F. Always verify:

  1. Wait 15 minutes after the last hot-water use.
  2. Turn the hot tap on at the kitchen sink. Let run 60 seconds.
  3. Insert a meat thermometer in the stream.
  4. Read temperature. Adjust dial to hit target.
  5. Re-check in 24 hours.

How to adjust by unit type

Gas tank

Dial on gas control valve at front bottom. Modern units: digital scale 100-140°F. Older units: "A/B/C" or "VAC/WARM/HOT" — verify the actual temperature at a tap with a thermometer.

Electric tank

Two thermostats (upper and lower elements). Set both to same temperature. Power must be off before accessing thermostats.

Tankless (any fuel)

Digital display on the unit front. Some have remote panels for kitchen wall. Setpoint range 100-140°F typically.

Heat-pump (hybrid)

Digital interface with WiFi control via manufacturer app. Eco mode at 120°F is the default.

Common temperature-related mistakes

  • Setting hotter "just to be safe." Increases scald risk significantly without meaningful benefit at the tap.
  • Setting lower to save energy. $15-$25/year savings doesn't justify Legionella exposure.
  • Trusting the dial without measuring. Dial setting and tap temperature often differ by 10°F+.
  • Forgetting both elements on electric tanks. Setting only the upper or lower thermostat produces inconsistent delivery.
